The Feldenkrais Method®

The Feldenkrais Method®

The Feldenkrais Method is a unique movement-based approach of learning with the focus on mindful movement and developing an awareness of communication between brain and body.

The  learning relies on Neuroplasticity, the inherent ability of the human brain to change and adapt to what we experience over a lifetime.

The Feldenkrais Method uses gentle movement and directed attention in a way that will influence how we think, feel and sense ourselves. This is the classic Greek idea of “Soma”, hence the Feldenkrais Method is also called a method of Somatic Education.

Gentle, specific movements and guided attention are used to become more aware of the human body’s structure and of habits. This experiential process provides new sensory-motor information , improves neuro-muscular connections and develops more effective patterns of coordination. Changes which happen are noticed as increased mobility, strength and stability.

It was developed by Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais as a synthesis of biology, physics, neuroscience and motor development to expand options for movement and action.

The Feldenkrais Method has many applications. It can help people of all ages and conditions, including those who wish to improve their physical comfort, posture, flexibility, balance, coordination, ease of movement and specific physical skills, and those who are recovering from injury or experience restricted movement, chronic pain, muscular tension, or neurological and developmental problems.

The Feldenkrais Method is highly recognized as a valuable learning method for professionals in Theatre, Sports, Dance and Music

….or anybody who wants to find out how to move well!

Two complementary ways of experiencing the Feldenkrais Method®

Awareness-Through-Movement Lesson (ATM).

You are guided through a sequence of movements which you are exploring by yourself as you are hearing them in a class or as an audio recording.

The slow and attentive movements which you are following within your own range enable you to understand your movement patterns and to find ways of how to change and reclaim efficient functioning by reorganizing your movement yourself.

There is a wide variety (more than a thousand lessons) to explore functional movements of rolling, sitting, crawling to walking and small steps in-between.

Students are often amazed at how quickly and clearly changes happen and the quality of the movement improves.

ATM is non-competitive and self-paced. Changes which can happen during an ATM lesson are increased mobility, ease, strength and stability.

Functional Integration (FI)

Individual hands-on sessions with a trained practitioner (Feldenkrais teacher). Each lesson is designed around your particular habits and needs. You sit or lie on a low padded table, in comfortable clothes, while your practitioner guides your movement with gentle subtle touch.

The environment is one of rapport and respect for the student’s abilities to learn in safety and comfort. Functional Integration Lessons are especially good for addressing specific or long-term issues or for enhancing your learning with ATM lessons.

Testimonials

What People Are Saying

“I definitely feel like I’m beginning to understand the complexity of my shoulders, that’s for sure. Since I’ve started doing Feldenkrais last October I definitely feel like there’s actually a shift in how I am relating to and respecting my body and I think my outlook on life is becoming more flexible. I’m going slower in all I do which is giving me space to reflect – which is challenging – but I’m slowly adapting to that too! Thanks for all your guidance,”

Ellen O’M.

Rowing Coach

“The workshop was so beneficial to me, I am so much freer, less pain and generally more energized and focused ! Many thanks!”

Betty O’T.

“Focus on the injury and the pain remains, improve the function and the pain will disappear.”
